Colours and Vegetables

....might be a favourite combination of words, or maybe that's ladle vision.  Either way, the summer is here to brighten up your plate and palette.

There are plenty of gardens around campus and the greater Halifax to get involved in.  So many projects...
  • Seemore Greens
  • Dalhousie Community Garden
  • DWC
  • Urban Roots (where the old highschool was)
I've been hearing some birds tweet, vegetables might be coming the ladle's way in Sept.  It's all heresay for the moment.

Also, if you didn't notice on the side bar; The ladle will not be serving over the summer but we will be hosting a few events and workshops.

If you are looking for Solidarity events...look no further.  The Activist circles are definitely active.  Check out...
Furthermore...

Plans for the September are falling into place.  We are working hard and visioning a serving space in the SUB that's, shall we say, more permanent.  Got something to say about this...we'd love to hear about it.  The more we know, the better we can serve you and you ...and you and you...

O-Week thoughts are bubbling over...It'll be a crazy busy time and we need help.  Want to volunteer with us, let us know.  We will certainly be looking for both happy helping hands and hunger bellies to feed.

Sexton, we're on to you, stuck like eggs to a window.  Right now, we're trying to figure out the logistics and filtering  through the bureaucracy of serving some healthy deliciousness on your end of campus.  Certainly, you've been neglected but we're looking to remedy that.  Tell us how you feel...

Got suggestions or recipes you want to share...email us

much summer love!!! the ladle

Last cooking/serving of the year!

This week marks the last cooking and serving for the 2011/2012 academic year -- and boy, it's been a wild one! From our denied ratification to our successful appeal, from honey-bee workshops to beer-making, from outdoor food fests to our new space in the SUB, and from a small, ambitious group of students, to a loyal group of cooks and eaters - we thank you for your continued help and support! This has been our first year as a levied society, and our first year offering regular, weekly food servings. We've learned a lot, cooked a lot, and ate a helluvalot -- and are looking forward to embarking on another adventure with you next year!

Cooking and Serving
A reminder that COOKING is this Monday (April 2nd) from 4pm - 10pm at St Andrew's Church kitchen -- and it's gonna be a PARTY! Come for any length of time! Use the ladybug entrance near Edward St to get in.
And then come to our SERVING, Tuesday (April 3rd) between 11am and 1:30pm in our space behind Booster Juice in the SUB. All welcome!

The Loaded Ladle is Looking for Board Members!

Join our team and make a difference! This is an amazing volunteer opportunity to get more involved on campus.

Many of our Board Members are graduating this year, so we're looking for new or existing volunteers to step up and take their place!

What is a Board Member?
If our members and supporters are the cauldron of soup, then the Board is the Ladle itself. Board Members oversee the general operations of the Loaded Ladle. They select and develop projects and initiatives, set policy, communicate with the DSU and Dalhousie administration, and work collectively with members (aka volunteers) and staff to guide the actions of the Ladle in accordance with our mandate and constitution.

Board Members will be responsible for delegating duties, jobs and ideas to members as they develop. They are not solely responsible for implementing action. In the unlikely event that volunteers cannot be found, Board Members come together to collectively decide on a course of action.

Being on the Ladle Board offers a broad range of learning experiences - from activism, consensus-building, grant-writing, and business plans, to overseeing staff, designing banners, screen-printing t-shirts, navigating administrations, and the ins and outs of grassroots organizing!

How does the Board work?
The Lade functions by consensus. All members have equal decision making sway, however Board Members are elected to help ensure the longevity and legitimacy of the Ladle as a campus community co-operative.

The Board consists of 8 members, at least 4 of which must be Dalhousie students. That means King's students and community members are welcome as well! Board Members will be elected during the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 22nd. They will be elected simply as Board Members, and not assigned to any particular position. The newly elected Board Members will work together to assign themselves these various positions:

- Outreach
- Workshops
- Creative
- Policy Analysis
- Radical Friend
- Human Resources (2 positions)
- DSU Communication

These positions are not necessarily fixed, but could be rotated among Board Members or altered depending on the vision of the new Board. These positions do not involve a list of tasks, but are rather areas of general responsibility and knowledge from which the Board Member is to contribute to the group. As stated earlier, Board Members will not be solely responsible for implementing action - the Ladle Board is about collective action, cooperation, shared knowledge, multiple viewpoints, and solidarity!

What do I need to be a Board Member?

An interest in radical food politics, a sense of initiative and personal motivation, a friendly attitude, and a willingness to commit for the academic year! You don't need any Board or administrative experience. We will provide training in consensus-based decision making, as well as the principles and practice of anti-oppression. We are also planning an exciting end-of-semester wilderness retreat, during which the existing Board will pass on skills and knowledge to the new Board, and together they can plan for the upcoming year.

We strongly encourage potential Board Members to have some experience with the Loaded Ladle. You can come out to cookings (Monday nights, from 4pm-10pm at St Andrew's Church), help out during servings (Tuesdays from 11am - 1:30pm in the SUB, clean-up from 1:30-2:30pm), come to a Board meeting (all welcome, contact us for times/locations), or email us to find other ways to get involved! You can also familiarize yourself with our mandate, by clicking the link "About the Loaded Ladle!" on this blog.

Sounds good! How do I get on Board?
If you're interested in joining the Loaded Ladle Board, nominate yourself!
Board Members will be elected at the Annual General Meeting, on March 22nd at 11:30 am in the SUB, rm 302.

All applications are welcome. For more information or a nomination form, contact us at: loadedladle@gmail.com
