Join our team and make a difference! This is an amazing volunteer opportunity to get more involved on campus.
Many of our Board Members are graduating this year, so we're looking for new or existing volunteers to step up and take their place!
What is a Board Member?
If our members and supporters are the cauldron of soup, then the Board is the Ladle itself. Board Members oversee the general operations of the Loaded Ladle. They select and develop projects and initiatives, set policy, communicate with the DSU and Dalhousie administration, and work collectively with members (aka volunteers) and staff to guide the actions of the Ladle in accordance with our mandate and constitution.
Board Members will be responsible for delegating duties, jobs and ideas to members as they develop. They are not solely responsible for implementing action. In the unlikely event that volunteers cannot be found, Board Members come together to collectively decide on a course of action.
Being on the Ladle Board offers a broad range of learning experiences - from activism, consensus-building, grant-writing, and business plans, to overseeing staff, designing banners, screen-printing t-shirts, navigating administrations, and the ins and outs of grassroots organizing!
How does the Board work?
The Lade functions by consensus. All members have equal decision making sway, however Board Members are elected to help ensure the longevity and legitimacy of the Ladle as a campus community co-operative.
The Board consists of 8 members, at least 4 of which must be Dalhousie students. That means King's students and community members are welcome as well! Board Members will be elected during the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 22nd. They will be elected simply as Board Members, and not assigned to any particular position. The newly elected Board Members will work together to assign themselves these various positions:
- Outreach
- Workshops
- Creative
- Policy Analysis
- Radical Friend
- Human Resources (2 positions)
- DSU Communication
These positions are not necessarily fixed, but could be rotated among Board Members or altered depending on the vision of the new Board. These positions do not involve a list of tasks, but are rather areas of general responsibility and knowledge from which the Board Member is to contribute to the group. As stated earlier, Board Members will not be solely responsible for implementing action - the Ladle Board is about collective action, cooperation, shared knowledge, multiple viewpoints, and solidarity!
What do I need to be a Board Member?
An interest in radical food politics, a sense of initiative and personal motivation, a friendly attitude, and a willingness to commit for the academic year! You don't need any Board or administrative experience. We will provide training in consensus-based decision making, as well as the principles and practice of anti-oppression. We are also planning an exciting end-of-semester wilderness retreat, during which the existing Board will pass on skills and knowledge to the new Board, and together they can plan for the upcoming year.
We strongly encourage potential Board Members to have some experience with the Loaded Ladle. You can come out to cookings (Monday nights, from 4pm-10pm at St Andrew's Church), help out during servings (Tuesdays from 11am - 1:30pm in the SUB, clean-up from 1:30-2:30pm), come to a Board meeting (all welcome, contact us for times/locations), or email us to find other ways to get involved! You can also familiarize yourself with our mandate, by clicking the link "About the Loaded Ladle!" on this blog.
